About US

Established in the 1971–72 season, Bunbury & Districts Little Athletics Centre is proud to be one of the longest-running Centres in Western Australia. For over 50 years, we’ve been dedicated to providing a fun, inclusive, and supportive athletics environment for children aged 5 to 16, regardless of their ability or experience.

Our programs are designed to help every child grow—whether they’re just learning the basics of running, jumping, and throwing, or training at an elite level with aspirations of competing at State or National championships. We focus on developing skills, building confidence, and encouraging every athlete to achieve their Personal Best (PB).

At the heart of our Centre is a family-friendly atmosphere. We encourage parents to get involved, support their children, and share in the joy of their progress. While not every child will win an event, every child has the opportunity to improve, set personal goals, and celebrate their own achievements. That’s what makes them all winners in our eyes.

We believe in recognising and celebrating effort, improvement, and participation—because every PB is a step forward, and every step forward is a success.

  • Plain Black shorts must be worn in all competitions. These shorts must have a little bit of length for modesty reasons.
  • Compression shorts can be worn but must be either skin/tan or black in colour and must stop 10cm above the knee
  • We do offer dispensation for those athletes that need to wear long, ‘leg-in’ style compression pants if needed for either religious or sensory issues if this is the case for your child please contact the committee via e-mail.

Parental Involvement

Be there for your kids.

A Community Built on Volunteers

Bunbury & Districts Little Athletics is proudly run entirely by volunteers. We rely on the support of every parent to help our Centre operate smoothly and successfully. Your involvement isn’t just essential—it’s also incredibly rewarding. Little Athletics is a family sport, and your participation makes a big difference, especially from your child’s perspective.

To ensure a safe and well-organised environment, our policy requires that at least one parent or guardian must be present at the field at all times while their child is competing. This long-standing rule helps us maintain proper supervision and ensures we have enough hands to run each event efficiently.

  • Please note: If a child is found without a parent or guardian in attendance, they will be withdrawn from that day’s competition.

There are many ways to get involved on competition days, and no prior experience is needed. Whether it’s helping at an event, recording results, or assisting with setup, there’s something for everyone. You’ll learn as you go—and have fun doing it!

Looking for a new family experience?

A Unique Family Sport

Little Athletics is a truly unique and family-focused sport. What sets it apart is that all age groups and genders compete at the same venue, at the same time. So whether you have a 6-year-old boy or a 10-year-old girl, they’ll both be participating — making it easier for families and reducing the need for extra travel.

As a family-oriented sport, parents play an active role each week. While the kids are out on the field competing, parents are right there with them—supporting, encouraging, and helping to officiate events. Many parents find officiating to be one of the most enjoyable aspects of Little Athletics. It gives you a front-row seat to your child’s efforts and achievements, while also allowing you to cheer on other young athletes.

It’s a great way to be involved, stay connected, and share in the excitement of your child’s sporting journey.

Date have not been finalised, watch this space for updates!

We ask families to arrive at the track at 8.00am to sign in athletes listen to morning announcements, warm up and be in place for competition to start at 8.30am.  As for finishing time(s) on competition days – it depends on the program, the number of athletes in each group but the younger U6-U8 age groups are normally complete by 10am with the U9-17 finishing by 11.00am. Friday Twilight comp times will vary with time of season due to amount of sunlight. It is anticipated the first Twilight event will be arrive for 4:30 for announcements, and a 5pm competition start so we finish and get packed away before it gets dark. Confirmation of times will go out via email to all members and be put up on Facebook.

We are blessed to be able to train and compete on a wonderful, World Athletics approved synthetic track,  Bunbury Regional Athletics Arena, Hay Park North, Bunbury.

We do recommend attending training sessions to help athletes improve your fitness and techniques but it is not compulsory. We are also open to supporting regional towns to having training sessions in their local towns (Donnybrook, Busselton, Bridgetown, Harvey, etc) to save families travel time during the week. If you are interested in hosting these, please talk to the committee – we can supply equipment.

It is compulsory to wear the Centre’s uniform. T-shirts or singlets are available for purchase at anytime during the season. Shorts must be black, If they have a logo it cannot be larger than a regular matchbox. The Centre uniform that is worn at centre level on a weekly is also worn at Country and State Championship level competition. Athletics West are very strict on this at State competitions so we also uphold this standard.

At weekly competition we recommend and encourage athletes to have a go at every event every week. This is so they collect championship points and also set as many personal bests throughout the season.

For Country and State Championships, we recommend children choose events they are most competitive in and really enjoy. There is a maximum number of events that a single athlete can nominate for 6 – 8 depending on age however, Be mindful that competing in maximum number of events – with their associated heats and finals – can be exhausting particularly for the younger athletes. If the kids are exhausted by the time their best or favorite event comes up then they won’t be able to perform at their best.

The Country Championships offers an opportunity for our athletes to set results which would qualify them for the State Championships.

Absolutely!

We are holding a “Come and Try” day at the Track on Saturday 11 Oct 2025.

It’s a great opportunity for children and families to experience Little Athletics before committing to the season. Kids can try out events like running, jumping, and throwing in a fun, supportive environment.
